1 Chronicles 21:28-30 King James Version (KJV)
28 At that time when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.
29 For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the burnt offering, were at that season in the high place at Gibeon.
30 But David could not go before it to enquire of God: for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
1 Chronicles 21:28-30 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
28 At that time, David offered sacrifices there when he saw that the LORD answered him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 29 The tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses made in the desert, and the altar of burnt offering were at the high place in Gibeon, 30 but David could not go before it to inquire of God, because he was terrified of the sword of the LORD’s angel.

28 David did not do as Saul who was told to wait on Samuel and disobeyed. David may have had priests here to help with the sacrifice or it may have been justified simply because David does it as act of worship and repentance which God receives, Saul did his sacrifice for what God could do for him, David sacrificed simply because of who God is.
29 David would be lead to move the tabernacle because of this event and then be lead further to build a temple of God, Solomon his son would build the temple. Sometimes God had us move where we worship and where we serve Him but we are to have a heart committed to Him even if there is a change.
30 David reacts in fear of the angel, this is a common even with angels because the righteous reverence the beings of God.
