1 Chronicles 17:3-6 King James Version (KJV)
3 And it came to pass the same night, that the word of God came to Nathan, saying,
4 Go and tell David my servant, Thus saith the LORD, Thou shalt not build me an house to dwell in:
5 For I have not dwelt in an house since the day that I brought up Israel unto this day; but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another.
6 Wheresoever I have walked with all Israel, spake I a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people, saying, Why have ye not built me an house of cedars?
1 Chronicles 17:3-6 Common English Bible (CEB)
3 But that very night God’s word came to Nathan: 4 Go to my servant David and tell him, This is what the LORD says: You are not the one to build the temple for me to live in. 5 In fact, I haven’t lived in a temple from the day I brought Israel out until this very day. I’ve been traveling from tent to tent and from dwelling to dwelling. 6 Throughout my traveling with the Israelites, did I ever ask one of Israel’s tribal leaders, whom I appointed to shepherd my people, Why haven’t you built me a cedar temple?

3 The word came to Nathan we have the word today it is the bible, what do we do with it. Are we open to hear God speak to us as Nathan was? We should expect for the Lord to speak to us to guide us, if we are His then He does not expect us to figure things out on our own but by Him leading us.
4 David wanted to build the house for the Lord a more proper house, this was not a bad thing David wanted to do, it was not what the Lord wanted David to do, sometimes the things we may want to do for the Lord seem good but if He tells us to do something else or tells us no then we need to keep following Him in ways He leads us.
5 The house of God was a tent it was not a permanent foundation, even though the effects of God for many were life changing. The house of God was originally in a tent so it could be moved as they moved in the wilderness.
6 God did not need a house of worship, true worshipers to the Lord can do it wherever we may be but the temple would serve a important purpose.
