1 Chronicles 19:10-15 King James Version (KJV)
10 Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.
11 And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.
12 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.
13 Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.
14 So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.
15 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.
1 Chronicles 19:10-15 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
10 When Joab saw that there was a battle line in front of him and another behind him, he chose some men out of all the elite troops of Israel and lined up in battle formation to engage the Arameans. 11 He placed the rest of the forces under the command of his brother Abishai, and they lined up in battle formation to engage the Ammonites.
12 “If the Arameans are too strong for me,” Joab said, “then you’ll be my help. However, if the Ammonites are too strong for you, I’ll help you. 13 Be strong! We must prove ourselves strong for our people and for the cities of our God. May the LORD’s will be done.”
14 Joab and the people with him approached the Arameans for battle, and they fled before him.15 When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they likewise fled before Joab’s brother Abishai and entered the city. Then Joab went to Jerusalem.

10 David puts somebody out that he can trust and now he is about to take actions because of their treat of war, the Lord on Israel’s side so anyone that would appose them would fail. He chose his best, he did not take the Lord being on their side to just send soldiers or anyone so the Lord could use them to win, and we need to put out our best for the Lord and we then will be given by Him the best results.
11 They are going to defeat both them at once rather then allow them to regroup together later they are going to rid the problem at the same time, the fact that they could divide their men to fight two battles shows the might that God had given to David’s army.
12 They were going to divide but trust in each other for help, this does not mean that they weren’t trusting in the Lord; they were just making a plan.
13 They trusted whatever happened to the Lord if they win or lose it was in the Lord’s hands and they were willing to accept that. We are to accept the Lord’s will even when we lose and keep trusting in Him when He gives us a win.
14 So they ran away, this shows a fear and a lack of will to fight.
15 The other army ran away because they no longer had their help. They trusted in the other people but Israel’s trust was in the Lord and this is where we should put our trust. They go back now that the fight was done. As Christians we keep the fight as we go.
