1 Chronicles 20:1-3 King James Version (KJV)
20 And it came to pass, that after the year was expired, at the time that kings go out to battle, Joab led forth the power of the army, and wasted the country of the children of Ammon, and came and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried at Jerusalem. And Joab smote Rabbah, and destroyed it.
2 And David took the crown of their king from off his head, and found it to weigh a talent of gold, and there were precious stones in it; and it was set upon David's head: and he brought also exceeding much spoil out of the city.
3 And he brought out the people that were in it, and cut them with saws, and with harrows of iron, and with axes. Even so dealt David with all the cities of the children of Ammon. And David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

Capture of the City of Rabbah
20 In the spring when kings march out to war, Joab led the army and destroyed the Ammonites’ land. He came to Rabbah and besieged it, but David remained in Jerusalem. Joab attacked Rabbah and demolished it.2 Then David took the crown from the head of their king, and it was placed on David’s head. He found that the crown weighed 75 pounds of gold, and there was a precious stone in it. In addition, David took away a large quantity of plunder from the city. 3 He brought out the people who were in it and put them to work with saws, iron picks, and axes.[f] David did the same to all the Ammonite cities. Then he and all his troops returned to Jerusalem.

These are my thoughts, please share yours.
1 They waited until the bad weather went away before they went out for war. The king normally went out with them to lead them, they would have much more faith in winning having their king with them, we see how Saul before David went out to war with them as he was king, our King has won the battle for us and we will just follow behind Him as He takes His earthly throne.
2 David heart is starting to change value other things rather then just following God and valuing his relationship with Him, By David having their king’s crown it showed that he was ruling over those that remained because of their defeat.
3 David was not to keep them but make them leave by having gone elsewhere or kill them, this was to prevent idolatry which would later happen because of the pagan influence of those that were left, David focus has started to be on money rather then God’s word.
